Abstract
Primary sternal osteomyelitis cases are rare. The etiological agents are those of osteomyelitis. In the case presented the hypothetical diagnosis was osteomyelitis caused by Kingella kingae, a pathogenic bacterium that is a frequent cause of osteomyelitis in children. Such a hypothetical diagnosis should be made if the age is < 3-4 years, the general physical conditions are not compromised, there is no fever or low fever and if laboratory analyses are scarcely significant. At present it is possible to identify the bacterium through targeted analyses of specific real-time polymerase chain reaction.
