NASOLACRIMAL DUCT OBSTRUCTION TREATMENT

Abstract
Aims: Evaluating the timing of probing in children with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
Methods: We evaluated the success rate related to the age of children at the time of probing in a retrospective study of 335 children aged 3 months to 7 years who underwent probing for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
Results: The success rate was higher in children from 3 to 12 months of age (90.8%) and decreas with the increase in age of young patients. 28 of the 73 unsuccesses (38.4%) were caused by a bone obstruction of nasolacrimal duct.
Conclusions: Probing is highly successful in the first year of life, but it can be also decisive in many older children.
