Abstract
Background - Obesity-related metabolic and cardiovascular diseases are already detectable in children and are often related to hyperinsulinism and insulin-resistance.
Aims - To investigate the effects of two hypocaloric diets with different glycemic index on weight reduction and multiple biochemical parameters of metabolic syndrome in obese children.
Method - 26 obese children (mean age 9.8 ys ± 1.7; range 8-12 ys) took part to the study. 13 subjects received a hypocaloric, high-glycemic index diet and 13 a hypocaloric, low-glycemic index diet. Parameters were collected before starting the treatment and after six months.
Results - A hypocaloric, low-glycemic-index diet in obese children significantly decreased BMI (p < 0.001), waist circumference (p = 0.01) and HOMA (p = 0.04) whereas a hypocaloric, high-glycemic-index diet was able to reduce only BMI (p = 0.03).
Conclusions - A low glycemic index diet had beneficial metabolic effects and, particularly, improved insulin-resistance and decreased waist circumference in obese children.
