Background - In recent years there has been a slow but steady change in the care of the
infant/child/adolescent patient needs: new types of patients, new situations and new objectives
of “health”. One of these “novelties” is the need of Palliative Care in the paediatric
population. The definition of eligibility of an infant/child/adolescent to Paediatric
Palliative Care is however far from being simple. You cannot take it directly to the inclusion
criteria for adult palliative care because children have very specific disease stories,
often related to their age and the time duration of the disease itself.
Objectives - The objective of the work is to create a document that contains the criteria for
the definition of eligibility in Paediatric Palliative Care.
Methods - The Italian Society of Palliative Care has identified a group of eight professionals
(doctors, nurses, and psychologists) with expertise in Paediatric Palliative Care who
worked from May 2014 to February 2016, incorporating the review of the available literature
with own clinical experience, in order to produce a consensus conference. The produced
document was reviewed by a larger group of experts.
Results - The teamwork have defined the eligibility criteria to the Paediatric Palliative Care
for infants/children/adolescents with oncological disease, not cancer, considering not only
the underlying disease but also the complexity of care and the health needs.
Conclusions - The document provides a practical instrument to clarify the definition of eligible
children to Paediatric Palliative Care and facilitate their takeover by the dedicated
welfare services in compliance with the content of the law no. 38.2010.
