Abstract
Ischemic stroke is a clinical syndrome characterised by the sudden onset of a neurological
deficit that can refer to the perfusion area of a cerebral artery and by the neuroradiologic
evidence of an ischemic lesion. The incidence of ischemic stroke in paediatric
age, excluding the neonatal one, is 1-6/100,000 children per year. The incidence is
higher in newborns (25-50/100,000 newborns) and it is even higher in premature newborns
(100/100,000 newborns). Morbidity is still high, mortality ranges between 5%
and 28%. Recurrence risk is about 20-30%. The goal of the this paper is to discuss,
starting from the description of a case of ischemic stroke, the present evidence and recommendations
on its management considering the recent NICE (The National Institute
for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines that bring about some novelties.
