The paper presents the case of a 22-month-old child with an acute onset of coeliac disease and recurrent intussusception. A prevalence of around 1% of intestinal intussusception in children with a new diagnosis of coeliac disease is described in the literature, a value that increases in the studies in which abdominal ultrasound screening was performed even in the absence of symptoms.
The pathogenetic mechanism has not been fully understood yet. The course of intestinal intussusception to the diagnosis of coeliac disease is generally benign, with spontaneous resolution of the picture with a gluten-free diet. In recurrent intussusception it is important to consider the treatment with steroids before resorting to a more invasive approach, which should be reserved for cases with symptoms of intestinal obstruction.
