Abstract
An increase in the quantitative lifetime radiation risk in the paediatric age, correlated with an exponential rise in computed tomography (CT) examinations, has been observed worldwide. Moreover, a positive association between the exposure to radiation doses from CT and the risk of developing brain cancer and leukaemia in childhood and adolescence has been demonstrated, together with the evidence of a significant rate of inappropriate prescriptions (nearly 40%). Since a lack of awareness and a gap in knowledge about the radiological risk have been highlighted among the healthcare professionals working in the paediatric setting, which could undermine their role in justification and optimisation of imaging examinations, the implementation of strategies for reducing CT exposures is urgently needed.
