Abstract
The use of full-face snorkelling masks (FFSM), frequently marketed as ‘easy-breath’ devices, is witnessing an exponential growth. This surge is driven by the promise of a 180° underwater field of view combined with ‘natural’ nasal-oral breathing, thereby eliminating the need for a traditional snorkel mouthpiece. Currently, the use of these devices is indicated by manufacturers for children as young as 6 years of age. However, despite their apparent ease of use, these masks conceal a significant physiopathological hazard: the dead space of the device may exceed the tidal volume of younger children, creating the conditions for a dangerous rebreathing mechanism. The paper explores this risk through three emblematic clinical cases presenting to the Emergency Unit of the IRCCS Burlo Garofolo following hypoxic-hypercapnic episodes associated with the use of full-face masks.
Riassunto
L'uso delle maschere da snorkelling Full-face (FFSM), spesso commercializzate come dispositivi "easy-breath" (a respirazione facilitata), sta registrando una crescita esponenziale. Questa diffusione è trainata dalla promessa di un campo visivo subacqueo a 180° unito a una respirazione "naturale" naso-boccale, eliminando coś la necessità del tradizionale boccaglio. Attualmente, i produttori ne indicano l'uso per bambini a partire dai 6 anni di età. Tuttavia, nonostante l'apparente facilità d'uso, queste maschere celano un significativo rischio fisiopatologico: lo spazio morto del dispositivo pụ superare il volume corrente dei bambini più piccoli, creando le condizioni per un pericoloso meccanismo di ri-respirazione (rebreathing). L'articolo analizza questo rischio attraverso tre casi clinici emblematici giunti al Pronto Soccorso dell'IRCCS "Burlo Garofolo" di Trieste a seguito di episodi ipossico-ipercapnici associati all'uso di queste maschere.
