Abstract
Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) is the most
important congenital deformity with regard to its incidence, functional
and aesthetical consequences and treatment difficulties. The
objective of our study was to evaluate a population-based screening
programme for DDH. Overall, 6152 children aged 1 to 92
days were enrolled in the programme. The screening consisted of
completing a form to detect relevant history and clinical risk factors
for DDH in all newborns. In those newborns with signs of DDH at
physical examination, hip ultrasounds were performed within 60
days if risk factors were detected, and within 3 months in the absence
of risk factors. A total of 51 DDH were detected and followed-
up to verify their clinical evolution. Our study showed a beneficial
association between the proposed DDH screening programme
and successful DDH treatment.
