Abstract
The prevalence of reading retardation in school children varies between 3,6% and 6%
among 3rd-4th grade students. The Authors illustrates the diagnostic algorithm which is
currently used to differentiate specific dyslexia from other learning problems. A framework
for identifying the most important contributing factors in each single case is also suggested.
According to the few available studies, the prognosis of reading retardation with respect to
the ultimate school outcome is not favourable in 80% of cases; female sex and high parental
educational level are the main protective factors. Based on these premises, a project aimed
at evaluating the validity of an early diagnosis programme based on a screening test
(Early Language Milestone) administered at 3 years, was started with the collaboration of
family paediatricians.
